The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) is seeking Trainee Ship Surveyors to join its technical team. As the semi-autonomous agency in charge of regulatory oversight over the Kenyan maritime industry, KMA focuses on strengthening maritime administration through the enhancement of regulatory and institutional capacities for maritime safety and security. This trainee position is designed to develop the technical competencies required to perform ship inspections, surveys, and certifications in accordance with national and international maritime standards.
Key Responsibilities
Ship Registry: Assist in the processes associated with the Kenyan ship registry.
Survey Supervision: Help supervise the work of Organizations authorized to perform survey work on behalf of Kenya in accordance with the Code for Recognized Organizations.
Construction Oversight: Assist in supervising the building and conversion of Kenyan ships.
Technical Evaluations: Participate in technical evaluations and/or calculations pertaining to ship safety equipment, machinery systems, load line, oil pollution prevention, hull structure, subdivision and stability, tonnage, and structural fire protection.
Pollution Prevention: Assist in supervising Noxious Liquid Substances pollution and the carriage of dangerous chemicals or liquefied gases in bulk.
Vessel Inspection: Assist in surveying Kenyan ships for issuance of ships’ certificates and the inspection of small vessels.
Safety Enforcement: Support the detention of unseaworthy ships and participate in conducting stakeholder training in respect of maritime safety, security, and protection of the marine environment.
Qualifications and Skills
Applicants must possess at least one of the following qualifications:
Certificate of Competency – Marine Engineer Officer (STCW)
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Environment
Bachelor’s Degree in Naval Architecture
Bachelor’s Degree in Nautical Science
