The Substation Control Technician is responsible for monitoring and maintaining station equipment in substations. This role involves observing switchboard instruments, performing necessary functions to restore equipment to normal operation, and ensuring the safety and efficiency of the electrical network.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare written documents such as substation maintenance reports and logbooks to record procedures and troubleshooting results.
Continually observe functioning station equipment, principally through meters and gauges.
Monitor switchboard instruments for unusual operating conditions and perform functions necessary to restore equipment to normal or remove it from service as required.
Switch and maintain substation equipment for proper operation; start, stop, and control units, adjusting load and voltage as needed.
Perform switching operations in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Maintain daily operating logs on routine and emergency operations, including line outages and weather conditions.
Record hourly readings of indicating and integrating meters; change and check recording instrument charts.
Act independently during emergencies by performing switching, adjusting load/voltage, or extinguishing fires.
Issue protective tags through established safe clearance procedures for all equipment in the plant and substation.
Note changes in load and make routine adjustments without immediate supervision.
Conduct periodic inspections of the station (inside and outside) to ensure proper operation and maintain security.
Maintain proper lubrication and cooling of generating units, transformers, pumps, and other rotating machinery.
Analyze problems to determine necessary repairs and inform relevant personnel.
Perform incidental duties such as battery maintenance, general housekeeping, and responding to public inquiries.
Conduct public tours of the station and perform sub-dispatching as required.
Assist in training apprentices and perform utility duties as directed.
Requirements
Diploma or Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Power Option).
Must be authorized to operate high voltage equipment by a licensed utility or operator (e.g., KPLC, KETRACO, EPRA).
Minimum of 3 years of experience in LV designs, plant operations for substations, or generation plants.
Experience in the operation and maintenance of 11/33/66kV electricity networks.
Experience in electrical plant matters, including repair and maintenance of indoor 11kV boards and breakers.
Experience in substation testing, annual maintenance, and primary/secondary injections.
Enhanced skills in locating and repairing defects in electrical systems, installing load break breakers, and high voltage terminating.
