Job Description
The Kenya Maritime Authority is seeking a Principal Surveyor for Maritime Investigation and Receiver of Wreck. This critical role involves regulatory oversight, leading investigations into maritime casualties, and managing the preservation of life and property in Kenyan waters.
Key Responsibilities
Maritime Investigations: Undertake and coordinate investigations within the maritime field, specifically focusing on maritime casualties and shipwrecks under the Casualty Investigation Code.
Wreck Management: Implement the Nairobi Wreck Removal Convention and take command of the preservation of vessels, cargo, and lives when a ship is wrecked in Kenyan waters.
Personnel Enquiries: Conduct enquiries regarding charges of incompetence against seafarers.
Regulatory Reporting: Report maritime casualty investigation outcomes to the Director General as required by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Safety Promotion: Publish lessons learned from casualty investigations to improve maritime safety.
Obligation Evaluation: Evaluate flag, port, and coastal state obligations, performance, and overall effectiveness.
Accident Investigation: Investigate occupational accidents as well as cases involving the suspension or withdrawal of seafarers' and ships' certificates.
Qualifications & Requirements
STCW Certifications: Must hold a Certificate of Competency as a Marine Engineer Officer or Deck Officer (STCW).
Educational Background: A Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Environment, or Nautical Science.
