As the Head of Agribusiness, you will be responsible for leading the agribusiness unit at Absa Bank Kenya. Your primary focus will be driving sales growth, implementing the country-specific agribusiness strategy, and managing a high-performing team of Relationship Managers. The role involves overseeing the entire agribusiness portfolio, ensuring profitable growth, and maintaining strong client relationships while mitigating risks associated with the sector.
Key Accountabilities
Overall Sales Management (50%)
- Increase team members’ sales skills to grow existing clients’ income and win new clients.
- Take full accountability of the Absa Kenya Agri Sales targets set for the financial year and the achievement of the targets by formulating action plans which provide clear direction to Relationship Managers.
- Ensure optimal team composition by having skilled and positive teams in place; ensure vacancies are filled proactively.
- Break down Agri targets to the individual Personal Development plan (PD) of each Relationship Manager.
- Constantly follow up in relation to the formulation, implementation and management of 90-day sales plans.
- Manage and monitor that appropriate and client-centric solutions are developed by the professional teams.
- Coach Relationship Managers in submitting high-quality applications to Credit and improving their ability to defend transactions in Deal Forums.
- Monitor client defection and ensure line management initiates appropriate retention strategies.
- Develop and implement identification and acquisition strategies for new clients and retention strategies for existing ones.
- Develop a business plan with sector and product specialists to ensure sustainable balance sheet growth.
- Participate in internal deal forums for large transactions and be actively involved in all appeals.
- Together with Business Bank, ensure optimal Agri marketing to facilitate meaningful client interaction and networking.
Implement Agri Strategy (30%)
- Develop and execute country Agriculture strategy aligned to group Agri strategy.
- Provide insights to Agri Exco to assist in developing or amending Agri strategy.
- Develop a commodity and country-specific Differentiated Client Value Proposition in conjunction with Agri CoE and Business Intelligence.
- Ensure optimal Agri relationship portfolio build per Banker, considering Cost-to-Serve and total portfolio size.
- Join Business Banking Manco as a permanent member.
- Report monthly to the Africa Agri Exco on Sales Actuals vs Targets, Key Client Acquisition progress, significant deals, identified risks, and people management issues.
People Management (10%)
- Develop and maintain an effective recruitment plan to ensure the team is composed of individuals with the right skills.
- Lead and inspire team members to deliver extraordinary work.
- Promote a high-performance culture through formal Performance Development, coaching, and mentoring.
- Determine training needs and ensure training plans are budgeted and executed.
- Manage all people management processes including Employee Relations, workforce planning, and Performance Improvement Plans (PIP).
Requirements and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Marketing, Agriculture, or Economics.
- 2-5 years of sales and financial experience in a commercial banking environment.
- 5 years of experience in a leadership / management role in a commercial banking environment.
- 8 years of relevant Agriculture market experience.
Technical and Soft Skills
- Understanding of complex company financials.
- In-depth understanding of credit solutions.
- Knowledge of the dynamics of the marketplace and industries (global, regional, and local).
- Working knowledge of risk mitigation and assessment.
- Ability to interface with clients at Managing Director (MD) or Finance Director (FD) level.
- Up-to-date industry knowledge.
