Our client, an international organization, is looking to recruit an Agricultural Market Specialist for an 8-month contract period. The specialist will be responsible for monitoring developments in the agricultural market within Kenya and Tanzania, identifying key local stakeholders, and supporting cross-border cooperation activities. The role involves conducting market research, providing technical assistance to local partner organizations, and developing farmer sourcing models to enhance the capabilities of SMEs in the agro-processing sector.
Responsibilities
- Monitor developments in the agricultural market in both countries and identify areas of greatest interest to client companies in the sector.
- Identify local stakeholders—businesses, cooperatives, public agencies, universities, and research centers—to foster collaboration and leverage resources for sustainable market development.
- Conduct a census of all companies dealing in agricultural machinery, equipment, and products, with a focus on importers.
- Support cross-border cooperation activities (Kenya & Tanzania), including the organization of exploratory missions, bilateral meetings, and promotional activities for agricultural and agri-food sectors.
- Use statistical programs to prepare market research and contribute to industry-specific market studies and analyses.
- Respond to requests from client companies and trade associations, providing technical assistance and guidance to local partner organizations to enhance productive capacities and quality standards.
- Develop constraints analysis to determine specific value chains with intra-regional and international export potential.
- Develop and support the scaling of in-country farmer sourcing models and enhanced value addition/agro-processing capabilities for SMEs.
- Contribute to knowledge management by documenting best practices, lessons learned, and innovative approaches in agricultural market systems development.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness, Economics, Statistics, or related fields.
- Progressive experience in market analysis of sectors such as agro-industry, deployment of new technologies in agriculture, and agricultural machinery.
- Minimum of 5 - 8 years’ experience working in the above-stated role.
- Creative thinker with strong interpersonal and analytical skills.
- Proficiency in statistical packages such as SPSS, Advanced Excel, MATLAB, STATA, and R-SOFTWARE.
- Exceptional time and deadline management skills; ability to lead and organize a team to drive goals.
- Adaptable and resourceful in a fast-paced business environment.
- Superior verbal and written communication skills in English and Swahili.
- Knowledge of the Italian language is an added advantage.
- Experience working with associations, government entities, and export/import promotion companies is a plus.
- A work permit to work in Kenya for expatriates and non-residents is required.
