Job Description
Malindi Water and Sewerage Company (MAWASCO) is seeking a Water Engineer to lead the strategic execution of Non-Revenue Water (NRW) reduction initiatives, optimize hydraulic distribution, and protect utility revenue through technical innovation and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Formulate and execute comprehensive programs targeting Real Losses (physical leaks) and Apparent Losses (theft/metering errors) in alignment with corporate objectives.
Oversee the design, stabilization, and performance monitoring of District Metered Areas (DMAs) while institutionalizing enforcement measures against illegal consumption.
Manage daily distribution operations and utilize hydraulic modelling to maintain pressure balance, prevent infrastructure fatigue, and minimize service downtime.
Coordinate Active Leak Detection (ALD) programs and manage the deployment of high-tech diagnostics—including data loggers and noise correlators—for predictive maintenance.
Manage the full life cycle of metering assets and lead field audits to detect tampering, collaborating with Billing teams to eliminate revenue leakage.
Spearhead the NRW annual work plans and performance targets, contributing to CAPEX/OPEX budgeting to ensure the fiscal efficiency of all interventions.
Synthesize operational data to identify loss trends and submit data-driven technical reports that rigorously track the Return on Investment (ROI) for recovery projects.
Enforce strict adherence to environmental, health, and safety (HSE) standards, ensuring all works meet Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and international best practices.
Drive community sensitization on water conservation while providing mentorship to the technical team to foster a culture of high performance and accountability.
Research and pilot emerging utility technologies to modernize and streamline water loss workflows.
Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Water Engineering, or a related field.
Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience, including at least 3 years in a middle management role.
Proven experience in NRW management and water utility operations.
Registration with a relevant professional body will be an added advantage.
Key Skills & Competencies
Strong knowledge of water distribution systems and NRW management practices.
Proficiency in ICT (MS Office).
Strong analytical, planning, coordination, and problem-solving skills.
Effective communication, stakeholder engagement, and teamwork in multidisciplinary environments.
Basic project management capability.
