Job Description
AAR hospital is a 140-bed Level 5 private referral hospital located along Kiambu Road, adjacent to Karura Forest. We are seeking a Night Supervisor (Nursing Supervisor Reliever) to provide managerial and clinical leadership during night shifts. The role serves as a vital link between nursing management and hospital administration in their absence.
Job Purpose
The Nursing Supervisor Reliever provides managerial and clinical links between the nurse manager and department direction in their absence, and the executive-on-call. Additionally, this position includes knowledge of utilization review rules and regulations to assist physicians and staff in assigning admission status.
Duties and Responsibilities
Promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
Assess patient care requirements on each unit by making rounds in the Emergency Department (ED) and all other hospital areas.
Assess patient acuity in relation to staffing arrangements and nursing ratios.
Develop and implement staffing plans for the shift based on patient acuity, census, and available staff.
Serve as a resource to staff for solving clinical problems and administrative/operational issues.
Assist staff to efficiently utilize staffing resources to meet patient care requirements.
Provide immediate follow-up, documentation, and communication of incidents to the appropriate manager and director.
Respond to emergency situations (Rapid Response Team, Code Blue) and assist as necessary.
Proactively anticipate potential problems and set shift priorities accordingly.
Work collaboratively with nursing and allied staff to solve problems in a fair, consistent manner.
Act as a resource to interpret and ensure adherence to hospital policies and nursing philosophy.
Report significant incidents (unusual patient/family concerns, physician concerns, equipment damage, utility outages, security/safety issues) to the administrator-on-call.
Obtain materials and supplies from stores for patient care when departments are closed at night.
Provide support, guidance, and feedback to staff and identify continuing education needs.
Consistently follow established safety and infection control procedures and intervene in unsafe situations.
Enhance and evaluate nursing practice according to hospital policies and regulatory requirements.
Adhere to the development and maintenance of nursing standards and protocols.
Manage, monitor, and evaluate professional and clinical standards ensuring an evidence-based care approach.
Participate in multi-disciplinary teams and facilitate coordination across health care programs.
Ensure timely documentation of nursing care and update patient records in the HIMs systems.
Ensure accurate billing and control costs in service delivery.
Qualifications and Experience
Higher diploma or Degree in Nursing recognized by the Nursing Council of Kenya.
Updated BLS/ACLS certificate.
Current annual nurse practice license issued by the Nursing Council of Kenya.
Minimum of 7 years’ experience post-registration, with 5 years in a senior Nurse, team leader position, or similar role.
Leadership and training in management is an added advantage.
