The multi-skilled carpenter will conduct carpentry and masonry works on new projects or refurbishments in residential buildings, office space, workshops, stores, or outdoors across the British High Commission Nairobi Estate. They will conduct their work safely and ensure safe performance of Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), reactive maintenance, fault finding, design, construction, and inspection of buildings and timber structures across the estate while maintaining a high level of workmanship and technical standards.
Roles & Responsibilities
Carpentry Duties (65%)
Carry out planned preventative maintenance activities, projects, refurbishments, and react to building maintenance and repairs in a timely, professional, and customer-focused manner as guided by the team leader.
Execute repairs and works safely and in accordance with FCDO quality standards, industry best practice, British standards, and Kenyan building regulations (National Construction Authority - NCA).
Read and understand work orders or receive instructions from the team leader.
Safely erect and inspect scaffolding for works within the range of 3 meters to enable safe working.
Maintain all equipment in a clean, safe, and serviceable condition, reporting any faults by the close of the working day.
Responsible for the safe use, storage, security, and accounting of materials and tools issued for tasks.
Comply with Health and Safety requirements, including reading, understanding, and complying with risk assessments and site safety orders.
Continuously self-improve on work processes to maximize cost-effectiveness, safety adherence, and construction excellence.
Conduct carpentry construction work, remodeling work with good workmanship, and produce specific method statements and risk assessments.
Use both power and manual tools.
Basic setup, low-level maintenance, and operation of woodworking machines (lathes, drill presses, sanders, shapers, and planning machines).
Proficient at stain-grade trim work, hanging doors, drilling and setting door hardware, and setting windows.
Read and understand blueprints, technical drawings, and utilize appropriate mathematics skills.
Perform routine building maintenance, design for small projects, path/road construction, inspection, building modifications, repairs, and replacements in residential/office buildings and special locations (e.g., swimming pools). Working at height is essential.
Masonry Duties (25%)
Carry out planned maintenance activities, projects, refurbishments, and react to minor masonry works like broken ridges and sealing valley gaps with cement.
Restore old and worn-out masonry.
Execute repairs safely in accordance with FCO quality standards, industry best practice, British standards, and Kenyan regulations.
Actively contribute to safe working practices.
Collaborate with other trades (carpenters, plumbers, electricians, technicians) to ensure seamless integration of masonry into overall construction.
Perform routine maintenance, construction, testing, inspection, fault finding, and repairs/replacement of masonry components.
Health and Safety Compliance and Driving (10%)
Support the Health and Safety Officer/Team Leader in conducting risk assessments and property compliance checks.
Inspect, maintain, and correctly wear task-specific PPE.
Assist in delivering materials or driving colleagues via canter/minibus across the estate for work delivery.
Ensure the TWG vehicle fleet is clean and serviced on time.
Ensure assigned vehicles are offloaded daily and parked in allocated slots.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
At least 4 years of hands-on carpentry, joinery, and cabinetry work experience.
At least 2 years of hands-on masonry work experience.
Qualification Grade 1 minimum in Carpentry and Joinery.
Qualification Grade 3 minimum in Masonry.
IT/Computer literate; familiar with Microsoft software including Outlook, Teams, Word, and Excel.
Valid driver’s license with at least 3 years clean driving record (a driving test will be conducted).
Good communication skills, attention to detail, initiative, customer service skills, flexibility, and teamwork.
Desirable
Artisan or Craft certificate in Carpentry & Joinery or equivalent building course modules.
Artisan certificate in Masonry or equivalent course modules.
Civil works experience.
Multi-skilled in additional technical areas such as plumbing, electrical, painting, etc.
Certificate in fire safety and first aid training.
