Library Intern

This is an internship position with the Library of the Registry at the United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals ("Mechanism") in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania, expected to start in December 2025 for a duration of 3–6 months. The Mechanism was established by the UN Security Council to carry out essential functions of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (“ICTR”) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (“ICTY”) after their mandates completion. The Registry provides administrative, legal, policy, and diplomatic support services from branches in Arusha and The Hague.

The Library, under the supervision of the Library Assistant, houses a wide selection of materials covering international law, international criminal law, genocide, and human rights. Services offered include Online Public Access Catalogues, document delivery via email, and in-person reference and research assistance.

Duties and Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Library Assistant, interns will provide support in the following areas:

• Assisting with basic library circulation functions: retrieval, check-out, discharge, and recalls of materials.
• Supporting the registration of new materials in the library system and performing cataloguing operations.
• Assigning classification codes, call numbers, printing labels, and affixing them on library materials.
• Providing information available in the library and/or through peer libraries to visitors.
• Assisting with library activities, such as locating online journal articles and responding to reference queries.
• Processing information by cataloguing and indexing library materials and maintaining the library management system.
• Providing guidance for library users, offering tours to visitors and clients, and responding to information requests and inquiries.
• Assisting in compiling daily news summaries from local, regional, and international media sources (radio, TV, newspapers, press conferences, and interviews).
• Researching, compiling, and presenting basic information for communications products/services preparation and production.
• Assisting in public relations and protocol services, including preparations for official visits.
• Assisting in the planning and implementation of public relations activities, including drafting social media messaging and researching archival material for visuals and outreach related to court activity.
• Supporting daily library administration.
