The Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) is seeking a Green Champion to drive environmental sustainability and climate resilience initiatives. This role focuses on promoting regenerative farming, establishing microforests, and supporting clean energy and water management solutions within local communities. The Green Champion will work closely with smallholder farmers, particularly women and youth, to improve livelihoods through nature-based solutions and market linkages.
Key Responsibilities
Promote Regenerative Farming
Mobilize smallholder farmers for training using existing community structures.
Develop fieldwork schedules in collaboration with coordinators and deliver training to target farmers.
Collect data regarding the adoption of practices and their impact on yields, costs, and income.
Document success stories, lessons learned, and best practices from field experiences.
Establishment of Microforests, Agroforestry, and Mangroves restoration
Conduct site assessments and participate in planting and follow-up activities.
Support community members, especially women, in establishing tree nurseries.
Monitor tree survival rates, disease/pest presence, and biodiversity changes.
Assist in nutrition assessments and deliver demonstrations on dietary diversity.
Support the adoption and maintenance of kitchen gardens for year-round food availability.
Market Linkages & Livelihood Strengthening
Help farmer groups identify priority value chains and improve aggregation/quality standards.
Coordinate training on post-harvest handling, value addition, and financial literacy.
Support the management of produce collection and storage systems.
Clean Energy & Water Management Initiatives
Perform site assessments for clean energy and water harvesting infrastructure.
Assist community members in adopting clean energy solutions and water harvesting facilities.
Document and monitor the impact of these assets.
Documentation, Reporting, and Learning
Report on the progress of all initiatives and draft project briefs for stakeholders.
Participate in workshops to enhance local understanding of climate adaptation strategies.
Develop communication materials, including reports and audio-visual content.
Requirements
Required Qualifications and Experience
At least a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Grade D+.
At least a Certificate in General Agriculture, Community Development, Forestry, or Agroforestry from a recognized institution in Kenya.
Age: Youth between 18 to 30 years, with a preference for women.
Proficiency in both English and Kiswahili (written and spoken).
Proven ability to deliver training to community members and farmers.
Competency in preparing field activity schedules and activity reports.
Strong multitasking skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
