The General Accountant at The Fairmont Norfolk, a historic luxury hotel in Nairobi, supports the Chief Accountant in all financial reporting and analysis. This role is responsible for ensuring that all business transactions are accurately reflected in reports, maintaining the general ledger, and adhering to statutory regulations and internal hotel standards. The position requires a detail-oriented professional capable of managing diverse accounting tasks within a luxury hospitality environment.
Responsibilities
Assist the Chief Accountant in preparing daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual, and ad-hoc reports and analyses, including voucher postings.
Ensure all information presented in reports is accurate, timely, and reflective of actual business transactions.
Conduct periodic surprise spot-checks on the General Cashier’s float and all Outlet Cashier floats.
Assist in surprise stock-count inspections and month-end stock-counts with the Cost Controller’s office.
Prepare groundwork for statutory audits and ensure compliance with tax and fee requirements.
Support the internal and external audit review process.
Administer tax filing and government reporting in compliance with Kenyan laws and regulations.
Maintain the General Ledger with journal entries and perform month-end reconciliations of Balance Sheet Accounts.
Prepare bank reconciliations of online statements on a daily and monthly basis.
Prepare monthly assigned journals and allocate shared expenses among departments.
Assist in the compilation of departmental budgets and forecasts.
Maintain the Fixed Asset Register.
Supervise and demonstrate duties in the assigned work area to set standards.
Maintain flexibility to rotate within different sub-departments of the Accounting & Finance Department.
Ensure all files and reports are properly archived for future reference.
Assist in carrying out periodic inventory of operating equipment.
Perform any other reasonable duties assigned by the Cluster Director of Finance and Business Support.
Requirements
A Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Accountancy.
Minimum of 1 year of relevant accounting experience within a luxury hotel or resort.
Knowledge of Sun Systems, Opera, Materials Control, and Kenyan Taxation is required.
An active CPA license is considered a significant advantage.
Must be an effective team player with the ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment.
Physical Aspects of Position
Constant standing and walking throughout the shift.
Occasional lifting and carrying up to 30 lbs.
Occasional kneeling, pushing, pulling, and ascending or descending ladders or stairs.
