Role Purpose
The Clinical Nurse in the Children’s Ward is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to pediatric patients. This involves assessing patient needs, developing evidence-based care plans, and ensuring safe clinical interventions to achieve optimal health outcomes.
Responsibilities
Complete thorough assessment and re-assessment of pediatric patients to identify specific care needs.
Develop written care plans based on changing needs, monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of nursing interventions.
Contribute clinical feedback during patient rounds with physicians and ensure investigations and reports are readily available.
Administer medications safely, monitor patient responses, and provide medication education to families.
Document all assessment data, investigation results, treatments, and multidisciplinary discussions accurately and in a timely manner.
Perform pain assessments and initiate analgesia according to hospital protocols.
Administer medications accurately as per treatment order sheets and MMU guidelines.
Identify patient and family education needs and implement appropriate teaching programs.
Manage enteral, oral, and gastric feeds as prescribed, assessing for absorption and elimination.
Recognize patients in pre-arrest or arrest states, activate the Emergency Response Team, and participate in resuscitation.
Maintain a safe patient environment by adhering to infection control practices and safety policies.
Perform timely safety checks on medical equipment including incubators, IV pumps, and cardiac monitors.
Ensure efficient use of resources, including accurate billing of ward stock drugs and consumables.
Maintain equipment through proper cleaning, storage, and shift-based inventory checks.
Participate in unit-based nursing education, quality improvement (QI) projects, audits, and skill checks.
Ensure 'Code Pink' (infant abduction protocol) is practiced at all times.
Assist in the orientation and mentoring of new nurses, junior staff, and students.
Provide leadership for the team and manage the unit during assigned shifts.
Provide basic nursing care independently and without supervision.
Requirements
KRCHN/KRM/BScN from a recognized school of Nursing or University.
Current Licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
Certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS).
Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in an acute care hospital.
Demonstrated evidence-based knowledge of current practices in pediatric nursing.
