The Banda School, a leading independent school in Kenya offering an outstanding educational experience to children aged between 2 and 13 years, is seeking a Year 1 Class Teacher for a Maternity Cover position. The successful candidate will be expected to uphold the school's ethos, which encourages a broad and balanced educational experience, an ambition to excel, and the creation of a nurturing environment.
Main Duties
- Design and deliver a broad, balanced, relevant, and stimulating curriculum for all pupils in the designated class, ensuring all work programmes are age-appropriate and fully adhere to national and school policies.
- Actively support and promote the ethos, aims, and values of the School.
- Manage and use assessment data effectively, ensuring timely reporting of pupil progress to all relevant staff, parents, and carers, in accordance with school policy.
- Direct and manage the classroom Teaching Assistant as required, ensuring effective support for pupil learning.

- Engage in continuous professional self-reflection in order to enhance and refine classroom teaching strategies.
- Make appropriate educational provision for pupils with learning difficulties and those with English as an additional language (EAL), working in collaboration with The Banda’s Learning Development Centre.
- Create a secure, happy, and stimulating environment, maintaining the highest standards of organisation and discipline.
- Work closely with colleagues in providing long and medium term plans.
- Ensure that the School’s aims and objectives regarding curriculum, equal opportunities, and behaviour are integrated and promoted within all aspects of daily classroom organisation and practice.
- Be committed to the school’s Continuing Professional Development programme.
- Play an active role in the general life of the school.
- Undertake required duties and attend regular staff meetings and INSETs.
- Assist, where necessary, in co-curricular sporting, dramatic, and musical events and activities.
- Organise and lead educational field trips, ensuring pupils participate in a safe and secure manner and that all school policies are strictly followed.
- Ensure confidentiality concerning pupils, parents, colleagues, and school business.
- Maintain professional levels of conduct and adhere to the School’s Code of Conduct for staff.
Required Qualifications, Experience, and Attributes
The Year 1 Class Teacher needs to meet the following criteria:
- Be a fully qualified teacher with Key Stage 1 training and experience (be registered with the TSC).
- Have experience of working in British curriculum schools.
- Be able to build good relationships with pupils, parents and families.
- Be able to build good relationships with colleagues.
- Be able to create a stimulating and engaging learning environment.
- Be able to use initiative, show flexibility and be adaptable.
- Be pro-active as a part of The Banda School staff team and possess the desire to be fully involved in all aspects of life in a leading preparatory school.
- Be punctual and use preparation time appropriately.
- Be a good communicator with adults and children.
- Show good organisational skills.
- Show a competent level of written English.
- Be able to use ICT in teaching. Familiarity with using interactive screens and iPads is an advantage.
- Present a clean Police Clearance Certificate or International Certificate of Child Protection (ICPC).
- Safeguard and promote the welfare of the pupils.
