Job Description
The World Resources Institute (WRI) is a global research non-profit organization that turns big ideas into action at the nexus of environment, economic opportunity, and human well-being. WRI is seeking a Writer/Editor to play a critical role in communicating the organization's research and strategic priorities. This position is responsible for producing, editing, and managing a variety of content types, ensuring they are clear, compelling, and tailored to the target audience.
Role Responsibilities
Editing (50%)
Strategic Guidance: Review content pitches from program and country communications teams and provide strategic guidance.
Substantive Editing: Substantively edit content authored by researchers and communications staff, including Insights articles, Technical Perspectives, Project Updates, project pages, and other content.
Quality Assurance: Ensure all content is clear, compelling, and fit for the audience.
Multimedia Collaboration: Work closely with WRI’s graphic design and video teams to produce multimedia that supports WRI’s written content.
Visual Research: Conduct photo research and draft captions to accompany editorial content.
Project Management: Project manage editorial pieces, including incorporating feedback from multiple reviewers and seeing projects through from concept to publication.
Writing (30%)
Content Creation: Draft articles, web copy, video scripts, brochures, newsletters, and other content to support WRI’s strategic priorities.
Thought Leadership: Ghostwrite articles and thought leadership content for researchers and senior leadership.
Content Strategy (20%)
Analytics: Track analytics for editorial and communications products. Use data-driven insights to inform content development.
Optimization: Utilize SEO and other digital best practices to ensure wide reach of key materials.
Strategic Brainstorming: Stay abreast of the news cycle and institutional priorities to brainstorm strategic content.
Requirements
Education: A completed bachelor’s degree in a relevant study area.
Professional Experience: Proven experience writing and editing in a professional setting. Journalism experience is highly desirable.
Coaching Skills: Experience coaching authors in improving their writing and storytelling skills.
Management Skills: Ability to work independently and juggle multiple projects while under deadline pressure.
Technical Knowledge: Knowledge of AP Style and experience with SEO and other digital best practices.
Topical Interest: Knowledge of and interest in environmental issues, including topics such as climate change, clean energy, food and agriculture, and sustainable cities.
