The Welder is responsible for performing welding and fabrication tasks to support Ol Pejeta Conservancy’s (OPC) infrastructure, equipment, and operational needs. This includes the repair, modification, and fabrication of metal structures, vehicle components, and specialized equipment required for conservation, security, and infrastructure projects. The role requires technical proficiency in various welding techniques, a strong commitment to safety standards, and the ability to execute high-quality work in both workshop and field environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Welding and Fabrication Tasks: Perform MIG, TIG, Arc, and gas welding for the repair and fabrication of metal structures, vehicle components, and infrastructure. Fabricate custom parts and tools to support OPC’s conservation and operational activities.
- Structural Repairs and Modifications: Repair damaged metal structures, including fences, gates, animal enclosures, and infrastructure support. Modify and reinforce vehicle frames, trailers, and specialized equipment as required for field operations.
- Blueprint Interpretation and Design Implementation: Interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and fabrication instructions to ensure accurate welding and assembly. Collaborate with the Fabrication Team Leader to ensure projects meet design specifications.
- Safety and Compliance: Adhere to occupational health and safety standards during all welding and fabrication activities. Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow best practices to ensure a safe working environment.
- Material Preparation and Equipment Maintenance: Prepare metal surfaces for welding through cutting, grinding, and cleaning. Maintain and service welding equipment, ensuring all tools are in good working condition and safety standards are met.
- Field Fabrication and Emergency Repairs: Provide on-site welding and fabrication services for emergency repairs in remote conservancy areas to minimize operational disruptions.
- Quality Control and Inspection: Conduct post-weld inspections to ensure the integrity, strength, and quality of welds. Identify defects or weaknesses and take corrective action to maintain structural safety.
- Collaboration with Team Members: Work closely with the Fabrication Team Leader and Machinist to coordinate tasks and share technical knowledge.
- Record-Keeping and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of welding activities, including job cards, material usage logs, and equipment maintenance reports.
- Other Duties: Any other additional duties as maybe assigned from time to time.
Qualifications and Experience
- Education: Certificate or Diploma in Welding and Fabrication, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Certifications: Certification in MIG, TIG, Arc, or gas welding is preferred. Additional training in advanced welding techniques or metalwork safety is an advantage.
- Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of experience in welding and metal fabrication, preferably in a busy workshop environment.
- Field Experience: Experience with infrastructure fabrication, vehicle modifications, and field-based welding.
Skills and Competencies
- Proficiency in multiple welding techniques (MIG, TIG, Arc, gas welding).
- Strong understanding of metal properties, blueprint reading, and structural design.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple fabrication tasks simultaneously.
- Commitment to health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
