The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is seeking a Statistician to be based in Kilifi. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and implementation of data management plans and systems for research projects, primarily focusing on mortality, morbidity, and intervention studies within the Kilifi Health and Demographic Surveillance System (KHDSS). This role involves advanced data analysis, interpretation of demographic trends, and providing statistical expertise for scientific publications and reports. Additionally, the Statistician will coordinate team activities, supervise data staff, and ensure compliance with all ethical and research governance protocols.
Key Responsibilities
Data Management: Develop and implement plans, systems, and tools for collecting, entering, cleaning, storing, and archiving project data.
Statistical Analysis: Conduct analysis and interpretation of mortality and morbidity studies using Kilifi Health and Demographic Surveillance System (KHDSS) data.
Scientific Communication: Provide statistical expertise for preparing summaries, reports, and briefs; contribute to the writing and publishing of research work for scientific forums.
Project Coordination: Prepare progress reports for the Head of Surveillance and committees, and present findings at departmental meetings.
Supervision: Manage and supervise data clerks and supervisors to ensure operational efficiency.
Collaboration: Build and maintain relationships with other departments and research groups to provide timely statistical deliverables.
Compliance: Ensure adherence to internal ethical protocols and external legal/regulatory requirements at all research phases.
Funding Support: Assist in identifying funding opportunities and developing grant proposals.
Vacancy Requirements
Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics or a related field from a recognized university.
Minimum of four (4) years of experience in a reputable organization.
Proficiency in statistical packages or coding languages (e.g., R, STATA, or Python).
Intermediate practical knowledge of SQL-compliant DBMS (preferably MySQL), OpenClinica, and REDCap database systems.
Demonstrated high levels of integrity and confidentiality.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
Ability to work within diverse, multidisciplinary teams.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to deliver quality outputs within strict timelines.
