Kenya Airways, the leading African airline, is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to serve as the primary point of contact and source of advisory for all legal matters across its global network. The role involves proactive identification, communication, and mitigation of legal risks in alignment with the overall business strategy. The incumbent will manage commercial legal transactions, aircraft leases, and litigation proceedings under the guidance of the Company Secretary & Director of Legal, Risk and Compliance.
Purpose of the Role
The Senior Legal Counsel acts as the central legal advisor for the company, managing open and anticipated legal cases and providing support across the network to safeguard the business against emerging risks.
Key Responsibilities
Provide legal advice and 'preventive lawyering' to both the Hub and outstations to mitigate risks before they impact the business.
Represent the company in contracts concerning Commercial, Joint Ventures, Financing, Aircraft Leases, Registration, and Procurement.
Negotiate and incorporate favorable clauses in commercial contracts to ensure business flexibility.
Act as the central point for all litigation matters, managing issues at both Group and country levels in liaison with external counsel.
Manage the engagement and instruction of external counsel, including fee negotiation.
Review and prepare all legal instruments to protect company interests.
Advise stakeholders on corporate authorities and ensure timely board and committee approvals.
Develop legal governance documents, templates, and instruments for operational support.
Prepare legal documentation such as proxy forms, powers of attorney, and tender documents.
Assist with international filings, business registrations, and license renewals for global subsidiaries.
Monitor external counsel to ensure effective representation and resolution of disputes.
Provide competition law advice and conduct compliance training.
Manage the company’s intellectual property portfolio.
Lead, mentor, and develop direct reports through performance management and career coaching.

Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Law (LL.B) from a recognized university.
Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law (KSL).
A Master’s degree in Law (LL.M), MBA, or Certification in Certified Secretary is an added advantage.
Minimum of 8 years Post Admission/Qualification experience, preferably in litigation or commercial law practice.
Demonstrable knowledge of aviation laws, regulations, and relevant legislation.
