Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) is a non-profit organization that combats urban poverty and gender inequity in the slums of Nairobi. The Sanitation & Hygiene Coordinator role is designed to support the WASH BCC (Behavior Change Communication) Officer in the planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of hygiene and sanitation activities. This includes behavioral change methodologies such as PHAST, CHAST, PHASE, and SBCC, and hygiene promotion campaigns within SHOFCO areas of operation, with a priority on schools, communities, and health care facilities.
Key Responsibilities
Participate in WASH BCC field activities to ensure effectiveness in delivery of hygiene promotion messages.
Provide support for and carry out WASH-NFI distributions, including organizing distributions, stock counts, and record-keeping.
Coordinate with water supply field staff to integrate various aspects of the WASH Program, ensuring water safety and environmental sanitation around WASH facilities.
Cooperate closely with the Monitoring and Evaluation team for preparing baselines, surveys, spot-checks, and follow-ups on WASH facility functioning.
Ensure the smooth operation of SHOFCO-supported sanitation facilities at both the community level and in partnered schools.
Track partnered CBOs on solid waste management to ensure sustainability of all integrated components.
Plan hygiene promotion and sanitation activities, including organizing sessions, trainings, mass campaigns, and sanitation promotion activities.
Perform other responsibilities required for the successful implementation of the WASH program.
Job Competencies and Qualifications
Academic Qualifications
At least a diploma in Public Health, Environmental Health, Community Health, or a related field.
Professional Qualifications and Experience
Minimum of 2 years' experience implementing participatory hygiene promotion and sanitation behavior change methodologies (e.g., PHAST, CLTS, CHAST, PHASE).
Experience in institutional settings (schools and health facilities) and at the community level.
Past experience working in urban informal settlements is a significant asset.
Functional and Behavioral Skills
Ability to demonstrate community engagement and mobilization skills.
Facilitation skills for hygiene and sanitation promotion tools.
Strong decision-making and task management skills.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a results-oriented culture.
