We are seeking a highly capable, hands-on Project Lead to design, implement, and operationalize a cocopeat production facility in Kilifi County. This is not an advisory or strategy role; we are looking for a professional who can build, commission, and stabilize operations within a 12-month period.
Role Overview
The Project Lead will be responsible for the end-to-end setup of the production facility, from equipment procurement to establishing market presence. The successful candidate will drive the production economics toward commercial viability and ensure a robust supply chain for raw materials.
Duties and Responsibilities
Facility & Operations Setup
Oversee equipment procurement, installation, and commissioning.
Design production workflows and plant layouts.
Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and quality assurance systems.
Recruit and train the initial operations team.
Product & Market Development
Define product specifications tailored for Kenyan greenhouse operators.
Conduct product trials with horticulture clients.
Support early customer onboarding and commercial agreements.
Develop cost structures and pricing models.
Establish packaging and logistics processes.
Financial & Performance Management
Develop operating budgets and working capital models.
Implement KPI tracking for yield, throughput, cost per m3, and rejection rates.
Drive production economics toward commercial viability.
Raw Material & Supply Chain Optimization
Design efficient husk collection and internal transport systems.
Ensure consistent raw material quality and optimize waste utilization.
Requirements and Qualifications
7–10+ years of experience in agro-processing, light manufacturing, or horticultural input production.
Demonstrated experience in setting up, commissioning, or scaling a production facility.
Strong operational execution capability.
A commercial mindset with the ability to engage sophisticated B2B customers.
Educational background: BA/BSc/HND in a relevant field.
Willingness to be physically present in Kilifi during the implementation phase.
Experience in cocopeat production or horticultural substrates is an advantage, but not mandatory.
