The role of the Nurseries Officer at Tatu City involves the comprehensive management and operation of the plant nursery, ensuring the healthy growth and availability of diverse plant materials for project and conservation sites. This position is crucial for supporting Tatu City's environmental and landscaping objectives, including the development of nursery operations towards commercial viability.
Key Responsibilities
- Propagate trees, grasses, and ornamental plants through seed collection, cuttings, and other vegetative methods.
- Maintain nursery stock through rigorous practices including watering, weeding, potting, pruning, and pest control.
- Monitor plant health, growth rates, and survival rates within the nursery environment.
- Prepare plants for dispatch to various project or conservation sites as required.
- Maintain all nursery infrastructure, tools, and necessary irrigation systems.
- Keep accurate records pertaining to the nursery, including species grown, quantities, and their current growth stages.
- Provide support to the environmental and landscaping teams by assisting with plant supply planning.
- Identify and implement innovative methods to mechanize and improve nursery operations efficiency.
- Collaborate with the City Manager and Head of Procurement to strategize and execute the commercialization of the Tatu City nursery.
- Ensure that all nursery practices strictly comply with established environmental and sustainability standards.
Requirements, Skills, and Experience
Qualifications and Education:
- A Degree or Diploma in forestry, horticulture, nursery management, or a closely related field is required.
Experience & Skills:
- Proven experience working actively in a tree and ornamental plants nursery setting.
- Comprehensive knowledge of indigenous tree and ornamental plant species, alongside expertise in various propagation techniques.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and strong, practical plant care skills.
- Ability to perform tasks effectively, both independently and collaboratively as an integral part of a team.
