This is an internship position under the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The intern will support the Monitoring and Reporting activities of the Regional Seas Programme (RSP) and the Regional Seas Coordination Project. This role provides an opportunity to gain practical experience in sustainability management, international environmental policy, and administrative processes within the United Nations system. No professional work experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme; however, your training, education, advanced coursework, or skills should benefit the UN during your internship.
Duties and Responsibilities
Implementation Progress Monitoring: Monitor and review the implementation progress of RSB activities and projects, as well as the 18 Regional Seas activities related to the Regional Seas Coordination Project, and assist with monthly reporting and biannual reporting in the Integrated Planning Monitoring and Reporting (IPMR) system.
Technical Content Compilation: Assist with the compilation of technical content for UNEP’s regular reporting on RSP activities (e.g., UNEA Resolutions, Programme Performance Reviews, Executive Director’s reports, UN General Assembly reports, or donor reports) by collecting and consolidating inputs from the 18 Regional Seas under the guidance of the supervisor.
Reporting Support: Assist with facilitating the submission of reporting, including following up on reporting requirements, templates, timelines, and other related requests.
Records Maintenance: Track, maintain, and update reporting inputs and activity records from the 18 Regional Seas, based on the separate reporting requests, to provide to the RSB.
Communication Materials Development: Support the development of communication materials and collaborate with the 18 Regional Seas, relevant divisions, and partners to request and consolidate case studies, best practices, reviews, and other relevant materials.
Administrative & Logistical Support: Provide administrative and logistical support to meetings, workshops, conferences, etc., including preparing background documents and presentations and taking notes as needed.
Other Duties: Perform other duties to support the work of the branch, as requested and in accordance with the intern's interests.
Qualifications and Special Skills
Applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:
Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent);
Have graduated with a university degree in Sustainability Management, Environmental Law, Environment Science, Ocean governance, Political Science, or other related fields.
Additional Skills and Attributes:
Demonstrate pleasant interpersonal skills.
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, including a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Has a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and has a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
A background in administration or human resources is a plus.
