This role is for a Migration, Environment and Climate Change (MECC) Youth Advocate Consultant, working under the overall supervision of the Regional Thematic Specialist - Climate Action and the direct supervision of the MECC Programme Officer. The primary objective is to drive visibility, advocacy, and capacity building efforts focused on the nexus of migration, climate change, and the environment among youth in the East, Horn, and Southern Africa regions.
Tasks to be performed under this contract
- Increase visibility of the MECC nexus in preparation for the regional and global conferences related to human mobility and climate change, such as but not limited to the Conference of Youth (COY) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) process and beyond on different social media platforms, including through other youth advocates.
- Support the production of audiovisual, promotional, and visibility materials related to MECC and youth to enhance advocacy efforts of the Climate Action Division. This may include photos, videos, human interest stories, press briefing notes, key messages, blog posts, or other materials for dissemination over social and other media and aimed at donor, partner, and community consumption.
- Participate in meetings, conferences, training sessions, and events as relevant to the Climate Action Regional Thematic Unit (RTU), such as the Kampala Declaration on Migration, Environment and Climate Change Expert Working Group, and other relevant events.
- Improve knowledge and skills of and engagement of youth in addressing human mobility in the context of climate change in the region, particularly through the cross-regional project on “Climate Change and Migration Data” and the relevant youth capacity enhancement interventions.
- Stay abreast of the MECC-related issues and challenges posed in the region, and institutional and humanitarian developments in the area of MECC.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Performance Indicators for Evaluation
- Develops a workplan in coordination with IOM and successfully implements it.
- Regularly communicates and updates of on-going activities and other relevant activities relevant to this assignment.
- Develops and promotes effective youth engagement on MECC in the region.
- Promotes IOM CAD work through the participation of the events, and other channels.
- Successfully supports the grant implementation phase of the youth capacity building programme on Climate Change and Human Mobility.
Qualifications and Experience
Education
- Have graduated with a university degree (second university degree or equivalent, Master, or higher) in Environmental Studies, Climate Change, Development, or Migration Studies.
Experience
- Three (3) years' experience in Youth engagement in East, Horn and Southern Africa.
- Knowledge on migration, environment and climate change.
- Demonstrated experience in climate mobility advocacy at regional and global events.
- Demonstrated experience in supporting youth capacity enhancement programmes on MECC.
- Proven experience in conceptualizing and producing publications on youth engagement in MECC.
