BURN designs, manufactures, and distributes aspirational fuel-efficient cooking products that save lives and forests in the developing world. BURN has revolutionized the global cookstove sector by proving the business case for selling high-quality, locally manufactured, and unsubsidized cookstoves. Since 2013, BURN has sold over 200,000 units. This internship role is designed for a proactive individual to support the engineering team in mechanical design, prototyping, and lab testing activities.
Duties and Responsibilities
Support mechanical design through CAD modelling of parts and sub-assemblies.
Prepare simple 2D drawings and update existing documentation.
Assist in concept development and iterations of product components, hardware testing jigs, and fixtures.
Actively support prototype fabrication, including 3D Printing, sheet metal work, laser cutting, and assembly.
Support and participate in lab testing activities, specifically mechanical and performance testing.
Help organize design files, revisions, and update Bills of Materials (BOM).
Skills and Experience
Recent graduate in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
Working knowledge of SolidWorks (Parts, Assemblies, Drawings).
Basic understanding of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles and manufacturing processes (sheet metal forming, injection moulding, 3D Printing).
Comfortable working in a prototyping environment with basic workshop tools and equipment.
Must present evidence of practical design projects (e.g., Final Year Project or personal builds) beyond theoretical coursework.
Ability to manage assigned tasks and troubleshoot issues with minimal supervision.
Fluent in English with good documentation skills.
Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in product development.
Exposure to workshops, labs, or Makerspaces.
Detail-oriented and consistent in following instructions.
Proactive, reliable, and able to incorporate feedback quickly.
Curious and eager to bridge the gap between theory and real-world application.
