Market and Product Development Officer II

Role Overview

The Market and Product Development Officer II is a graduate entry-level position within the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA), a state corporation mandated to regulate, develop, and promote scheduled crops value chains. This role involves implementing strategies for market expansion, product promotion, and intelligence gathering to drive economic growth within the agricultural sector. Officers may be deployed in either Market and Product Development or Market Research and Intelligence functional areas.

Key Responsibilities

Market and Product Development

• Promote the establishment of agricultural produce collection centres in viable regions.
• Execute market and product promotion activities across local and international markets.
• Train and build the capacity of stakeholders regarding the market potential of scheduled crops.
• Implement strategies for knowledge transfer and the adoption of value addition technologies.
• Facilitate linkages between financial institutions, insurance providers, and value chain players.
• Execute market and product development policies, strategies, and guidelines.
• Enhance the international recognition of scheduled crops through branding, mark of origin registration, and packaging to ensure traceability.

Market Research and Intelligence

• Perform market research on product trends and identify growth opportunities for diversification.
• Organize and hold stakeholder forums to disseminate research findings.
• Conduct surveys regarding domestic market prices and food supply/demand dynamics.
• Map relevant stakeholders for comprehensive market studies.
• Promote the processing and value addition of scheduled crops.
• Collect and update data on production, prices, trade, imports, and exports.
• Maintain a robust market information system for scheduled crops.
• Prepare meeting reports and industry agreements between farmers and processors.
• Develop country position papers to advocate for trade and market access during negotiations.

Person Specifications and Requirements

To be considered for this role, candidates must have:

• A Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following disciplines: Commerce, Business Management, Marketing, Agricultural Economics, Agriculture, Horticulture, Agribusiness Management, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
• Proficiency in computer applications.
• Willingness to satisfy the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya 2010.
