This role, Legal Assistant / Paralegal – Debt Collection, supports the Debt Collection Department by managing legal recovery processes. The primary focus is on Small Claims Court matters, enforcement actions, settlement documentation, and regulatory correspondence. The role ensures efficient legal support to recover outstanding debts while maintaining compliance with applicable laws and internal policies.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Initiate, track, and manage Small Claims Court cases for overdue and defaulted accounts.
- Prepare and file pleadings, statements, applications, and other court documents.
- Maintain an up-to-date register of all legal recovery cases, judgments, and enforcement actions.
- Liaise with courts, advocates, auctioneers, and external legal service providers.
- Support enforcement processes including warrants, proclamations, attachments, and settlements.
- Draft settlement agreements, consent letters, and payment plans for debt resolution.
- Provide legal guidance to the Debt Collection team on recovery procedures and compliance risks.
- Monitor case timelines and ensure adherence to statutory and court deadlines.
- Prepare legal and recovery reports for the Deputy Head and Head of Debt Collection.
- Support responses to regulator queries, complaints, and legal notices related to debt recovery.
- Maintain proper filing and secure custody of all legal and recovery documentation.
Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from a recognized institution.
Experience:
- At least 2 years’ experience in a legal, paralegal, or debt recovery role.
- Demonstrated experience handling Small Claims Court matters.
- Experience in debt collection, asset recovery, or financial services is an added advantage.
