Job Description
About the Role
The ICU Nurse is responsible for providing professional and compassionate nursing services and high-quality care to patients. The primary objective is to ensure that patients are reviewed and treated according to Hospital protocols, nursing standards, and best practices within the Intensive Care Unit environment.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Treatment Journey: Work with the Clinical team to navigate patients through their treatment, addressing underlying medical conditions and ensuring all nursing protocols are administered according to set policies.
Critical Care Management: Manage patients requiring advanced life support interventions, including mechanical ventilation, vasoactive infusions, and dialysis. Continuously monitor and interpret vital signs using advanced systems and respond promptly to changes.
Bedside Procedures: Assist in and manage complex procedures such as intubation, central line insertions, chest tube insertion, and peritoneal dialysis. Titrate IV infusions (e.g., inotropes, vasopressors, insulin drips, sedatives) according to ICU protocols.
Documentation & Monitoring: Maintain up-to-date ICU charts and flow sheets, including hourly input/output monitoring, pressure area assessments, sedation scores, and ventilator settings.
End-of-Life Care: Manage end-of-life care with empathy and professionalism, including comfort measures and supporting families through difficult decisions.
Patient Safety: Adhere to International Patient Safety Goals (IPSG) and maintain unit-specific certifications (ACLS, BLS, and Critical Care Nursing).
Coordination: Participate in patient admissions, ward rounds, and handovers. Ensure consultants have obtained proper consent for all procedures.
Infection Control: Maintain and enforce infection control standards, observing bundles such as SSI, VAP, CAUTI, and CLABSI.
Governance & Compliance: Adhere to corporate governance policies, including fraud prevention, and comply with all Avenue Healthcare policies and Government/Nursing Council of Kenya standards.
Supervision: Supervise Patient Assistants (PAs) as per their specific job descriptions.
Qualifications and Experience
BScN or Diploma in Nursing; a Higher Diploma in Nursing is an added advantage.
A valid Nursing License from the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK).
Valid certifications in BLS, ACLS, and Critical Care Nursing.
Minimum of 2+ years of experience working in a busy clinical or ICU environment.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and team-playing skills.
Highly responsive, ethical, and customer-focused mindset.
