Role Overview
The Global Technical Senior Specialist – Nutrition (GTSS-N) is a critical member of the FEWS NET Decision Support Team (DST). The specialist provides high-level technical expertise to support the identification, monitoring, and analysis of nutrition-related trends and their integration into food security projections. This role involves advising on best practices for nutrition data usage, leading data collection efforts, and collaborating with cross-sectoral teams to project acute food insecurity up to 12 months into the future.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership: Support the Nutrition Advisor in identifying and implementing work plan activities. Advise on best practices for nutrition data analysis and the development of nutrition-based assumptions for food security monitoring.
Data Management & Analysis: Lead the development of assumptions regarding the evolution of nutrition in monitored countries. Support the Data Management Advisor in accessing and maintaining nutrition-related databases, including metadata and methods information.
Capacity Building: Develop and deliver guidance and capacity development materials for FEWS NET DST staff regarding nutrition data interpretation.
Collaboration: Work with regional technical specialists to ensure nutrition assumptions align with conflict, livelihoods, agroclimatology, and market trade data. Coordinate with Quality Assurance and Hub standards for data product delivery.
Field Activities: Lead the planning, management, and implementation of primary data collection, including SMART surveys, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews.
Stakeholder Engagement: Contribute to bilateral and multilateral engagements with partners such as the IPC/CH, food security clusters, and UN agencies.
Crisis Monitoring: Identify emerging nutrition crises early and provide rapid briefings or assessments to the USG (U.S. Government) within requested timelines (often 24 hours to one week).
Qualifications and Experience
Education: Bachelor’s degree in a discipline relevant to FEWS NET is required (e.g., Nutrition, Public Health, Data Science). A Master's degree or higher is preferred.
Experience: Minimum 5 years of relevant experience (with a Master's) or 6 years (with a Bachelor's). At least two years must be directly related to nutrition or food security.
Technical Skills: Significant experience in analyzing nutrition surveillance systems and interpreting nutrition data. Proficiency in conducting SMART surveys and rural rapid appraisal techniques.
Communication: Excellent writing, editing, and presentation skills in English. Proficiency in French is strongly preferred.
Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrated ability to coordinate with diverse stakeholders (UN, NGOs, governments) and work in multidisciplinary, remote teams.
Software: High proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with statistical software packages and/or GIS applications is a plus.
Authorization: Must have unrestricted work authorization for the country where you are based (Kenya).
