Job Description
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Specialist to support the Nairobi Convention Secretariat. Under the overall supervision of the Head of the Nairobi Convention Secretariat and in close coordination with the project manager of the NC-SWIOFC PP 2, the consultant will be responsible for developing a detailed interactive atlas to support coastal ecosystem management and conservation in the Moma and Machanga districts.
Role and Responsibilities
Interactive Atlas Development: Utilize GIS tools to create a detailed interactive atlas featuring comprehensive maps of Moma and Machanga districts.
Physical and Oceanographic Data Mapping: Map archipelago zones, management areas, elevation, ocean floor features, and continental shelf extent. Analyze trends in currents, tides, sea surface temperature, salinity, and ocean chemistry.
Oceanographic Modelling: Perform modelling for ocean circulation, water mass formation, and the transport of pollutants and marine organisms.
Ecological and Biological Data Visualization: Map high ecological value habitats including coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass, and dunes. Track fish and invertebrate species abundance, distribution, and migratory corridors for flagship and vulnerable species.
Fisheries and Restoration Mapping: Identify fish nursery areas, suitability for habitat restoration and aquaculture, and designate no-take or co-managed marine parks.
Natural Capital Assessment: Identify hotspots for overfishing, pollution (land-based sources, plastics, wastewater), and habitat degradation.
Climate Change Modelling: Develop models for temperature rise, ocean acidification, and sea-level rise.
Qualifications and Experience
Education: Advanced university degree (Master's) in Geographic Information Systems, Ecology, Environmental studies, Marine science, coastal ecosystems management, or a related discipline. A first-level degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in developing or implementing programmes on coastal ecosystems conservation or natural resources management.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in geographic information systems (e.g., ArcGIS), information management, and the preparation of professional presentations.
Regional Requirement: Direct working experience with coastal communities in Mozambique is strictly required.
