Role Purpose
Reporting to the Group EHS Manager, the Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Coordinator ensures the effective implementation and maintenance of EHS standards, as well as Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles across defined companies.
Key Responsibilities
Fire Safety and Emergency Preparedness & Response
- Ensure the company is compliant with the requirements of the Fire Risk Reduction Rules 2007.
- Ensure facilities are inspected for fire safety by relevant authorities and a valid fire clearance certificate is issued.
- Coordinate, record, and conduct fire drills twice a year and provide recommendations for improvement.
- Train employees on basic fire & first aid practices and emergency preparedness response.
- Conduct regular inspections in the workplace and make recommendations to improve fire safety.
- Liaise with service providers to maintain firefighting equipment and fire alarm systems.
- Provide relevant information and fire safety signage (fire action plan, emergency contacts).
Accident/Incident Management
- Implement a system for reporting and documenting all workplace incidents, accidents, and significant near misses.
- Investigate all workplace accidents and incidents, and give recommendations to prevent recurrence.
- Carry out trend analysis of workplace accidents and suggest improvement plans.
- Facilitate access to medical services for employees injured at the workplace.
PPE Compliance
- Conduct PPE profiling to establish appropriate PPEs based on risks and guide management on purchase.
- Conduct PPE audits and enforce usage among employees, contractors, and visitors.
- Train employees on correct PPE usage and its importance.
Welfare and Hygiene Facilities
- Ensure adequate supply of clean drinking water and cups.
- Maintain clean and enclosed changing rooms (separated by gender) and conduct regular locker fumigation.
- Ensure presence of staff lockers, well-stocked first aid boxes, and resting bays.
- Maintain high hygiene standards in washrooms, canteens, and kitchens (clean running water, soap, tissue, dryers, sanitary bins, pest control).
Housekeeping and Ergonomics
- Keep workstations neat; keep gangways and emergency exits free from obstruction.
- Oversee mark spacing of aisles to allow movement of forklifts/pallet trucks.
- Coordinate deep cleaning with providers and compile reports.
- Provide manual handling aids (pallet trucks, forklifts) and ergonomic office seating.
Safety Controls (Electrical, Machinery, Air, Chemical)
- Inspect electrical fixtures and appliances every 6 months to address hazards.
- Perform safety checks on machine guards, operator sensors, and emergency stops.
- Enforce Contractor Management Policy, including issuing permits to work and conducting toolbox talks.
- Monitor indoor air quality and maintain ventilation/extraction systems.
- Maintain Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at chemical stations.
Waste Management and Compliance
- Ensure the company works with certified waste handlers and compiles statutory waste management files.
- Ensure waste segregation at source and provide labeled bins.
- Conduct regular EHS committee meetings and encourage anonymous feedback via suggestion boxes.
- Manage external audits (NEMA, County Government, WRMA, etc.) to maintain regulatory compliance.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Academic Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Science, Environmental Health, Engineering, or a related field.
Professional Qualifications
- NEBOSH IGC or equivalent Occupational Safety qualification.
- Training in Fire Safety, First Aid, and Emergency Response.
- ISO 45001 and/or ISO 14001 Internal Auditor certification is an added advantage.
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years' experience in Environment, Health and Safety within a manufacturing, packaging, or similar industrial environment.
- Experience conducting workplace risk assessments and incident investigations.
- Experience coordinating statutory inspections and regulatory compliance.
- Experience in ESG reporting or sustainability initiatives is an added advantage.
