The Donkey Sanctuary Kenya, an affiliate of the Donkey Sanctuary UK, is seeking a Donkey and Mule Welfare Lead to join the team in Nairobi. The successful candidate will quality assure all work within the Kenya Strategy, ensuring that global Donkey and Mule learning and standards are effectively implemented. You will build an evidence base for Kenya that links sustainable welfare outcomes to evidence-based interventions and contribute to global thought leadership by representing Donkey and Mule Welfare at national and regional forums.
Responsibilities
Lead donkey and mule welfare quality assurance for directly implemented and partner-led programs in collaboration with the global Head of Programme Quality.
Transform donkey and mule welfare through improved practices in priority areas such as Nutrition, Water, and Working Practices.
Actively participate in global technical working groups to integrate Kenyan equine learning into global policy and standard practice.
Develop and disseminate health and welfare educational materials for training animal health students, professionals, and donkey-owning communities.
Provide technical input for communication, advocacy, and campaign strategies, particularly regarding the campaign against the Donkey Skin Trade and Donkey Bush Slaughter.
Monitor equine diseases (including zoonotic ones) within Kenya and the region through stakeholders like WOAH, FAO, DVS, and research institutions.
Lead the design, data collection, and analysis of donkey and mule welfare research.
Represent the organization in technical meetings at national and regional levels and build collaborative partnerships with key stakeholders.
Requirements
A Degree in Veterinary Medicine.
At least 4 years of experience in donkey health practice.
Minimum of 3 years of experience in Kenya within the Animal Welfare or International Development sector.
Demonstrable knowledge of Equid Health, harnessing, and Nutrition.
At least 2 years of experience in advocacy work at national and international levels.
Excellent communication and presentation skills.
Fully competent in Microsoft Office 365.
Fluent in both English and Swahili (written and verbal).
A full valid Kenyan driving license.
