Job Description
Human Rights Watch is seeking a Disability Rights Division Intern to support research and advocacy efforts regarding the rights of persons with disabilities. This role involves assisting with documentation of human rights issues, including violence, involuntary detention, and the shackling of people with disabilities in institutions. Interns will have the opportunity to apply academic skills in a professional setting, attend professional development workshops, and network within the human rights sector.
Responsibilities
Research Support: Transcribing, organizing, and formatting interview notes and research materials related to disability rights issues, such as shackling and involuntary detention.
Expert Engagement: Participating in meetings with disability experts and stakeholders as opportunities arise.
Special Projects: Undertaking additional projects that align with the intern's specific interests and the division's needs.
Professional Development: Participating in lectures, trainings, workshops, and networking events hosted by Human Rights Watch.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate academic program for the duration of the internship term.
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required.
Fluency in another language is desirable.
Well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable candidates with strong attention to detail are required.
Previous desk research experience with an understanding of and a strong interest in international human rights is preferred.
Interest and/or experience in the disability rights field is desirable.
Relevant coursework in disability rights, human rights, law, and/or policy is a plus.
Strong internet research and computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, internet applications) are required.
