Director, Information Security

Human Rights Watch is seeking a Director of Information Security to lead and supervise all aspects of its global Information Security program. This leadership role involves designing and managing work plans, setting priorities, monitoring and evaluation, and collaborating with international partners. The Director will be responsible for maintaining an information security risk management program and ensuring cohesive security frameworks across the organization.

Responsibilities

• Design, manage, and supervise the Information Security program, including implementation of work plans and budget management.
• Implement and maintain an information security risk management program across departments, collaborating with the Director of Physical Security.
• Advise on technical security concepts including network security, email security, remote data, and third-party security.
• Develop and manage global information security policies, standards, guidelines, and procedures to ensure confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data.
• Lead information security planning processes to establish a comprehensive program supporting all information systems and technologies.

Requirements and Experience

• Successful candidates typically possess around 10 years of experience in the Information Security field.
• At least 5 years of management experience, with 3-5 years specific experience in managing a team.
• Extensive knowledge of information security and risk management, ideally in an international organization or journalism context.
• Practical experience in high-risk and complex operating environments.
• Working knowledge of the risks associated with human rights, civil society activism, and journalism globally is required.
• Security management experience and/or prior director-level role in a related field is required.
• A relevant degree (BA/BSc/HND) is expected, though candidates with equivalent experience and capability are encouraged to apply.
• Relevant security certifications or advanced degrees are a plus but not a requirement.
