This role is designed to manage and execute Customs and Excise activities across Diageo’s footprint in East Africa, specifically covering Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
Role Purpose
To manage the Customs and Excise activities in Diageo’s footprint in East Africa and execute relevant strategies and policies to ensure compliance and efficiency.
Key Accountabilities
Specialist Support: Provide expertise on customs issues in East Africa, including product classification disputes (customs and excise), Customs Valuation, and Inter-Company Selling Price (ICSP) reviews.
Authority Management: Manage Customs and Excise related queries from authorities regarding imported products and raw materials used in East Africa.
Trade Projects: Oversee the customs and excise components of international trade projects to deliver shareholder value and mitigate business exposure.
Process Improvement: Address inefficiencies and drive process improvements within the Customs and Excise arena.
System Optimization: Recommend and implement changes to optimize processes, systems, policies, and procedures.
Regulatory Monitoring: Stay updated on regulatory changes and best practices, identifying risks and opportunities to recommend actions.
Key Interactions
Internal: Collaborate with Global Tax partners, business unit leaders, and global functions (Supply, Legal, and Corporate Relations) to deliver end-to-end supply chain efficiency.
External: Proactively manage relationships with Customs & Excise authorities, regulatory bodies for licenses/permits, and international/regional trade bodies. Provide specialist input for local site excise audits.
Requirements and Skills
Experience: At least 5 years of professional experience in customs and excise.
Education: BA/BSc/HND degree in a relevant field.
Background: Previous experience within a Global Trade or Tax advisory function in a consulting firm or a multinational manufacturer (ideally beverage or tobacco).
Technical Proficiency: Strong data analytics skills (Power Query, Power BI, etc.) and experience with SAP or an equivalent ERP system.
Capabilities: Advanced knowledge of customs and excise, international trade experience, and effective project management skills.
Mindset: A compliance and ethics-oriented mindset with the ability to work across diverse cultures.
