Kenyatta University is seeking a Curator/Medicinal Garden Horticulturalist Grade C/D. This role involves the comprehensive botanical management and scientific curation of the university's medicinal plant collections and herbarium to support academic research and conservation efforts.
Responsibilities
Garden Management: Managing and maintaining the university's medicinal garden, including propagating and maintaining living collections of medicinal plants.
Taxonomy and Identification: Assisting in the identification and classification of medicinal plants for research purposes and providing taxonomic identifications for departmental projects.
Curation: Curating the departmental herbarium, which involves the collection, preservation, and database management of plant specimens.
Training and Supervision: Training and supervising students and technicians in herbarium practices, specimen curation, and the propagation/processing of medicinal plants.
Fieldwork: Conducting field expeditions to collect medicinal plant vouchers and specimens.
Qualifications and Experience
Education: University degree or equivalent in Taxonomy, Botany, or Plant Sciences.
Technical Knowledge: Demonstrable knowledge of Kenyan biodiversity and indigenous medicinal plants.
Herbarium Skills: Demonstrated proficiency in herbarium preservation techniques and database management.
Propagation Skills: Demonstrated experience in medicinal plant propagation and processing.
Digital Literacy: Proficiency in computer applications.
Terms of Service
A competitive remuneration package including basic salary, house allowance, and medical cover as per the University Scheme will be provided.
