The Building and Construction Trainer is responsible for delivering competency-based building and construction training in accordance with NITA, KNEC and TVET Authority (TVETA) requirements. The role focuses on equipping trainees with practical technical skills, safety awareness, and professional competence required for certification, employment, or self-employment in the construction industry.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Deliver building and construction theory and practical lessons as per NITA, KNEC and TVETA-approved curricula.
- Prepare lesson plans, training schedules, practical demonstrations, and workshop/site-based exercises.
- Train students in Masonry, Tiling, and Pipe Fitting including interpretation of drawings, material selection, and workmanship standards.
- Guide trainees on setting out, mixing ratios, brick/block laying, plastering, finishes, and quality control checks.
- Train on wall and floor tiling: surface preparation, adhesive mixing, tile layout, cutting, fixing, grouting, and finishing.
- Train on pipe fitting and basic plumbing: pipe measurement, cutting, threading/joining, fittings selection, leak testing, and maintenance practices.
- Register students for NITA trade tests, KNEC Examinations and ensure compliance with assessment timelines.
- Conduct continuous assessments, practical evaluations, and mock trade tests.
- Ensure proper use, maintenance, and safety of workshop tools, site equipment, and materials.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress, performance, and practical logbooks.
- Mentor students on work ethics, safety standards, teamwork, and workplace readiness.
- Coordinate industrial attachments, site visits, and industry linkages for skills exposure and employability.
- Participate in curriculum review, staff meetings, and professional development activities.
- Support internal and external audits, inspections, and accreditation exercises.
- Perform any other duties related to training and student development as assigned.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Building and Construction, Building Technology, Civil Engineering (Construction option), Plumbing/Pipe Fitting, or a related field.
- Accreditation: Must be NITA certified and eligible to train NITA courses. Must be TVET Authority (TVETA) accredited or registrable as a trainer.
- Pedagogy: Must have pedagogy training (TVET pedagogy / instructional methods / trainer methodology or equivalent).
- Experience: Minimum 1-3 years relevant industry or teaching experience in construction trades (masonry/tiling/plumbing/pipe fitting).
- Experience in vocational or technical training is an added advantage.
- Professional Certifications (Added Advantage): Master Craftsperson Certification (Masonry/Plumbing or related trade); Recognized certification in tiling, plumbing/pipe fitting, or construction safety (OSH).
