The Associate Director of Finance at The Nature Conservancy (TNC) offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the mission of conservation by directing and shaping the work of the Africa Business Unit finance team. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional communication and collaboration skills and have extensive experience in the management of financial data and personnel.
Roles & Responsibilities
Functional Management: Manage the day-to-day activities and personnel in the Africa Business Unit's Accounting, Treasury, Audit and Compliance, budgeting, and reporting areas.
Compliance & Controls: Responsible for managing, maintaining, and reporting financial data; monitoring management controls and processes to ensure compliance with TNC policies, legal/regulatory frameworks, and financial best practices.
Budgeting Leadership: Co-lead the fiscal year budgeting process, ensuring accuracy and deadline completion. This includes developing templates, aligning budgets with activities and staffing plans, and ensuring cost recovery.
Strategic Alignment: Manage overall financial activities to achieve the Africa program's strategic goals and oversee day-to-day tasks in various finance functions.
Proposal Support: Lead and support budget development for proposals, private award management, cost assignments, and award modifications. Ensure compliance with donor requirements and TNC policies.
Financial Analysis: Provide high-level financial analysis to senior organizational leadership regarding budgets and financial performance.
Reporting: Support the finance team in periodic and annual tasks, including Council and Leadership reports and revenue allocations, to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
Operating Budget Maintenance: Co-lead the multi-year operating budget maintenance with the Conservation Director, ensuring cost coverage for operating expenses.
Cross-functional Engagement: Track business forecasts and budget performance to ensure alignment with annual strategic plans and highlight performance challenges or opportunities.
Capacity Building: Supervise professional finance staff and build their capacity through mentorship and development.
Requirements
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
Advanced Education/Certification: MBA and CPA(K) or ACCA qualification.
Experience: At least 7 years of related work experience.
Leadership: Experience recruiting, supervising, and developing staff.
Technical Proficiency: Experience with computer and information management systems, advanced Excel spreadsheets, and databases for financial analysis.
Sector Experience: Experience managing a large finance department in a not-for-profit organization and familiarity with GAAP and NPO accounting principles.
Project Management: Experience in developing, managing, and implementing multiple complex projects.
Strategic Advisory: Experience acting as an advisor to senior executives.
Regulatory Knowledge: Experience working with major public donor regulations and local statutory regulations.
