The Associate Director interprets policies, guidelines, and procedures while ensuring full compliance with TNC (The Nature Conservancy) policies and local labor regulations. They proactively mitigate risk in complex and sensitive situations and support the design and implementation of programs that promote staff development. This position reports to the HR Director, Africa, and requires a high degree of confidentiality, sound judgment, and a strong understanding of organizational dynamics.
Responsibilities & Scope
- HR Operational Leadership: Provide guidance to People managers, HR managers, and teams on talent management.
- Client Group Advisory: Serve as the primary HR point of contact for a designated client group.
- Supervision: Lead and supervise HR Managers to implement HR programs and policies, tailoring them to local needs while ensuring consistent, high-quality service delivery across assigned country programs.
- Compensation & Equity: Lead annual compensation and equity review processes for Africa to ensure fairness and alignment with global standards.
- Employee Relations: Advise on employee relations issues, ensuring compliance and risk mitigation.
- Talent Acquisition Support: Collaborate with the Talent Acquisition Specialist on strategies for mid-to-senior level and critical roles, adhering to workforce plans.
- Engagement & Culture: Drive initiatives to enhance employee engagement, retention, and development; support fostering an engaging team culture through team-building activities.
- Compliance: Monitor and interpret employment laws across multiple jurisdictions, communicating changes and ensuring full compliance.
- Performance Management: Oversee the implementation of performance management processes and merit planning.
- Escalation: Escalate complex issues to the HR Director for resolution.
- Travel: This role may require travel across Africa and occasional evening or weekend hours.
What You’ll Bring
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Experience: A minimum of 8 years of Human Resources Management work experience as an HR Generalist.
- Leadership Experience: Demonstrated experience supervising and leading HR staff.
- Relationship Management: Proven ability to build consultative relationships with staff at all levels and influence leadership-level decisions.
- HR Knowledge: Advanced understanding of fundamental HR concepts, processes, and services, including multi-jurisdictional employment laws.
- Project Management: Experience coordinating and leading complex HR projects and responding to data information requests.
- Policy Development: Demonstrated experience developing, reviewing, and maintaining HR-related guidelines and business processes.
- Service Excellence: Customer service experience with the ability to deal effectively and sensitively with all levels of staff and service providers.
- Certification: HR certification is preferred (e.g., AIHR, CHRP, PHR, SHRM-CP).
