Role Outline
The Yard Marshal is responsible for proactive control, coordination, and risk mitigation of vehicle and pedestrian movements within yards and controlled premises. The role goes beyond basic traffic direction to include hazard anticipation, behavioral risk detection, incident prevention, coaching of drivers, and enforcement of yard safety standards, monitoring trucks in and out flow in the transport yard, and supervising fueling.
The Yard Marshal is responsible for ensuring safe, efficient, and disciplined yard operations at DHL Supply Chain site. The role supports on-time dispatch, yard safety, asset protection, and operational excellence, in line with DHL Supply Chain standards, HSE policies, and the continuous improvement culture.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Fuel & Fleet Supervision: Supervise fuel offloading into the Bowser and sign off for quality. Ensure fueling of trucks starting from 6:00 am (including Sundays and public holidays) for early departure to Distribution. Sign and authorize fuel DIV for both own fleet and subcontractor trucks. Ensure fuel quantity is issued as per approved DIV, and seal/padlock is in place after fueling.
Yard & Traffic Control: Control and guide the movement of trucks, forklifts, delivery vans, motorcycles, pedestrians, and contractors within the yard. Enforce one-way rules and pedestrian safety within the yard. Manage the parking lot, isolating spaces for loaded, empty trailers, and those on VOR (Vehicle Off Road).
Safety & Hazard Mitigation: Enforce safe yard practices including decoupling, coupling, reversing, and vehicle control to the carwash. Act as a competent banksman for reversing trucks and docking operations using standardized hand signals and radios. Scan the yard environment to identify hazards early (blind spots, congestion, weather risks).
Compliance & Reporting: Enforce pre-trip checklist processes, ensuring exiting trucks have valid county permits, insurance, and NTSA inspection certificates. Ensure trucks with noted mechanical failures are re-routed to workshops. Respond to and investigate incidents; report and escalate noncompliance, speeding, distracted driving, or poor reversing.
Documentation & Administration: Accurately record trailer movements, arrivals, and departures in the Yard Management System (YMS) or manual logs. Verify seal integrity, truck condition, and delivery documents. Maintain accurate records to support audits.
Security: Safeguard DHL and customer assets, ensuring effective deployment of the DSC 6 Steps security framework.
Requirements
Diploma in Logistics or any related course.
At least 3 years’ experience in a busy Transport environment as a Yard Marshal.
Well experienced in the safety aspects of a transport company.
Banksmanship skills.
Kenya Region Market Experience.
Valid driver’s license (HGV).
Incident investigation and report writing skills.
Fluency in spoken and written English and Kiswahili.
