Britam is a leading diversified financial services group, listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange, with operations across the Eastern and Southern Africa region. We are seeking a Senior Underwriter - Specialty to join our team in Nairobi.
Role Purpose
The Senior Underwriter - Specialty is responsible for reviewing proposal forms, verifying client data, and assessing, pricing, and determining the terms of proposed risks within established standards. This role ensures the quality selection of risks and timely service by counterchecking policy terms and conditions.
Key Responsibilities
Risk Assessment: Determine the acceptability of risks, recommend risk surveys, and monitor the terms of assigned accounts.
Mentorship: Train and mentor assigned staff on technical underwriting matters to enhance their skills.
Specialty Lines Management: Handle the review of specialty lines, specifically focusing on bonds and financial lines.
Record Keeping: Maintain detailed records of all bonds and manage the onboarding and cancellation process for bonds and related financial lines insurances.
Site Valuations: Assist in onsite valuations, surveys, and risk management assessments using provided templates and photographic evidence.
Information Analysis: Research, collate, and assess risk information related to buildings, property, employees, and clients.
Compliance: Check and sign assigned underwriting documents to authenticate them according to the authority matrix.
Retention & Renewals: Prepare renewal notices and perform follow-ups to ensure high retention rates of assigned accounts.
Financial Administration: Requisition premium refunds and ensure that premiums are paid for all managed accounts.
Stakeholder Relations: Maintain effective business relationships with clients and intermediaries to ensure superior service delivery.
Quality Standards: Monitor service standards within the section to ensure high-quality customer service.
Qualifications and Experience
A Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution.
At least 4-6 years of experience in Underwriting, specifically with experience in Specialty Lines.
Professional insurance qualifications (ACII or AIIK).
