Role Overview
BURN is seeking a Senior Carbon Technical Manager – VCM Biomass Lead who will take full technical ownership of BURN’s biomass carbon portfolio. The successful candidate will ensure projects are delivered on time, compliant with global standards, and optimized for credit issuance across multiple pathways. This role combines strategic leadership, technical expertise, and stakeholder management to drive high-quality MRV systems, verification processes, and continuous improvement across BURN’s carbon operations.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Portfolio Health: Ownership of BURN's carbon portfolio health, ensuring issuance volume delivery on time, on scope, and on budget.
- Team Management: Assign projects to SCTEs and SCTOs; set reporting targets and functions with junior technical teams and QA/QC.
- Compliance: Work with Carbon Policy and QA/QC teams to ensure portfolio compliance with all methodological and industry-approved integrity benchmarks.
- Contract Management: Lead VVB contract management for the assigned project portfolio.
- Information Management: Manage all carbon technical documentation; provide technical responses on new methodologies, ratings agencies, and investor updates.
- Strategic Forecasting: Review emergent trends in the ICVCM and forecast technical threats and opportunities.
- Capacity Building: Oversee implementation of capacity building and training programmes.
- Reporting: Provide quarterly SMT reports on portfolio health and inter-departmental initiative tracking.
- Stakeholder Relations: Develop and maintain relationships with VVBs, GHG certification registries (Gold Standard, Verra), and the UNFCCC Article 6.4 Supervisory Body.
- Biomass Specifics: Take full technical ownership of the improved biomass cookstove carbon portfolio across all active project countries; lead Annual Plan preparation including monitoring schedules and budget requirements.
- MRV Systems: Own the design and improvement of MRV systems including Kitchen Performance Test (KPT) protocols (v4) and KOBO survey instruments.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor's degree (BA/BSc/HND) in a technical field and Professional Certificates.
- Experience: Minimum 5 years' experience in voluntary or compliance carbon markets with a strong track record in MRV and monitoring report preparation.
- Project Success: End-to-end ownership of at least 3 certified projects and 1 Programme of Activities (PoA) developed within the last 36 months.
- Technical Knowledge: Deep working knowledge of Gold Standard GS4GG Cookstove Requirements, Verra VCS, AMS-II.G methodology, and fNRB determination.
- Mechanism Familiarity: Experience with CORSIA-eligible projects and working knowledge of the UNFCCC Article 6.4 Supervisory Body mechanism.
- Management: Minimum 2 years managing a team of 5–15 technical or project management professionals.
- Tools: Experience with KOBO Toolbox or equivalent field data management platforms.
Desirable Qualifications
- Working knowledge of project countries like Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Malawi, Rwanda, Zambia, or Zimbabwe.
- ISO Lead Auditor training or equivalent QMS audit qualification.
- Proficiency in Swahili or other relevant Sub-Saharan African languages.
