Role Overview
Under the supervision of the Deputy Director, the Scientific Writer and Communication Manager will support the development of project research areas, data collection processes, data analysis, the development of scientific abstracts, and publish manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals. This role is crucial for contributing to the evidence base in global health security and disease surveillance while also supporting monitoring and evaluation (MEL), reporting, knowledge management, and communication efforts to strengthen program visibility and impact.
Key Responsibilities
Manuscript Development and Scientific Publishing
- Develop and implement a realistic publication strategy for the project.
- Identify operational research opportunities in CGPP implementation areas.
- Convert implementation experiences, success stories, and innovations into high-quality, publishable scientific articles.
- Lead end-to-end manuscript development using program data and research findings.
- Conduct comprehensive literature reviews and stay informed on emerging scientific trends.
- Manage journal submission processes, including open-access publishing and peer review.
- Simplify complex scientific information for non-technical audiences.
- Ensure articles comply with reporting standards such as STROBE and PRISMA.
- Develop policy briefs, technical reports, and tailored messaging for policymakers and donors.
Monitoring and Evaluation (MEL)
- Support MEL in strengthening the project information system and data translation for public health impact.
- Build program teams' scientific writing skills and documentation culture.
- Conduct quarterly field monitoring visits, spot checks, and data quality audits.
- Support partners in implementing community-based disease surveillance systems for infectious and zoonotic diseases.
- Coordinate the development of programmatic reports including quarterly and annual project reports.
- Track performance indicators to measure achievement against strategic objectives.
Content Development and Distribution
- Create communication instruments like presentations, bi-weekly bulletins, and briefing materials.
- Coordinate with departments to gather success stories for quarterly newsletters.
- Research and edit public relations materials, brochures, and social media content.
- Support field teams with context-specific communications for local stakeholders.
- Collaborate on the production of project videos, expert interviews, and documentary-style content.
- Maintain digital media archives and ensure branding compliance.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Health or other medical-related fields; Master's degree is an added advantage.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in scientific or medical writing and research publications.
- Proven experience in scientific journalism or science communication.
- Familiarity with peer-review systems and journal submission guidelines.
- Expertise in disease surveillance, immunization, and global health security.
- Strong understanding of operational research methodologies and data interpretation.
- Proficiency in reference management software (e.g., EndNote, Mendeley, Zotero).
- Experience with data analytical software (Stata, R-studio, SPSS, QGIS/Arc GIS).
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite, WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite, and Canva.
- Willingness to travel frequently to Northern Kenya and Somalia border regions.
