Information about the Role
British American Tobacco (BAT) is seeking a Regulatory Engagement Executive to support the execution of its fiscal, regulatory, and anti-illicit trade (AIT) strategies in Kenya. This junior management position involves managing both internal and external communications, maintaining relationships with government agencies, and ensuring the company's reputation is protected through proactive advocacy and clear communication of business principles.
Key Responsibilities
Fiscal and Regulatory Strategy Support
- Support the local execution of the fiscal strategy while being cognizant of local business and reputational risks.
- Monitoring the local excise and trade environment and stay informed on research regarding demand, tax revenues, and illicit trade.
- Supporting the formal submission process to the National Treasury, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), parliamentary committees, and other relevant government agencies.
- Preparing robust local analysis that will feed into advocacy for the delivery of key messaging to the National Treasury, Kenya Revenue Authority, and relevant parliamentary committees.
- Monitoring the local regulatory environment covering BAT’s product portfolio.
- Supporting the Senior Regulatory Manager Kenya in developing, in collaboration with the COE, the local regulatory engagement strategy and providing support in respect of the corresponding communication plan.
- Supporting the formal submission process to local regulators.
Anti-Illicit Trade (AIT) Strategy
- Support the local execution of the AIT strategy developed by the COE while being cognizant of the local business, security, and reputational risks involved.
- Collecting information for appropriate reviews and evaluation of illegal competitors’ activities.
- Providing assistance in the procuring of local advocacy to support BAT’s position.
- Performing administrative activities (risk management, payment of invoices, etc.) in respect of consultants, professional service providers, and champions.
- Supporting the deployment of local engagement and campaign communications.
External Communications Management
- Support the implementation of BAT Kenya’s external communications strategies.
- Development and improvement of local media relations in line with BAT Kenya strategy and engagement through two-way communication with the media.
- Development and circulation of press releases and news articles about company activities.
- Representation of the company in media interviews, press conferences, and events.
- Managing and supervising the BAT Kenya website.
Internal Communications and Brand Management
- Management of Internal Communications by delivering corporate information to the entire workforce consistently using internal communication methods.
- Leading all internal communications through business briefings, conferences, emails, MS Teams, and newsletters.
- Corporate brand management by understanding the rational aspects of the corporate brand and effectively applying the corporate visual identity in the business.
- Communication of major policies/operations to all employees and driving culture change through effective communication of business principles across the company.
- Supporting the local deployment of campaign/advocacy materials and proposals to support BAT’s position on key issues (including THR).
- Carry out support tasks concerning local media positions, media training, and the company spokesperson role as appropriate.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Educational Background: University Degree.
- Government and Corporate Affairs Expertise: Minimum of two years’ proven experience in public policy or corporate affairs.
- Corporate Communications Expertise: Minimum of two years’ proven experience in corporate communications or a media management role.
- Stakeholder and Network Management: Confirmed ability to work with third-party networks and diverse partner groups to drive organizational objectives.
- Industry, Regulatory, and Fiscal Expertise: General understanding of the tobacco/nicotine industry, including its regulatory environment and fiscal frameworks (added advantage).
- Commercial Savvy: Business understanding, commercial awareness, and the ability to resolve problems.
