The Recoveries Manager will be responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing effective debt recovery strategies to minimize non-performing loans (NPLs) while ensuring compliance with internal policies, regulatory requirements, and ethical collection practices. The role focuses on maximizing recoveries, improving portfolio quality, and supporting the Bank’s overall credit risk objectives.
Responsibilities:
Strategic & Operational Responsibilities
- Develop and implement debt collection and recovery strategies across retail, SME, and corporate portfolios.
- Monitor and manage the Bank’s NPL portfolio to ensure timely and effective recovery actions.
- Set recovery targets, track performance, and prepare regular management reports on recoveries, arrears trends, and write-offs.
- Review delinquent accounts and determine appropriate recovery actions, including restructures, settlements, and legal recovery.
Stakeholder & Relationship Management
- Collaborate with Credit, Relationship Managers, Branches, and the Risk team to proactively manage problem accounts.
- Provide guidance to Relationship Managers on early warning signs and remedial actions.
Legal & Compliance (Commercial)
- Ensure all collection and recovery activities comply with CBK guidelines, consumer protection laws, and the Bank’s internal policies.
- Enforcement of contractual obligations in cases of a breach.
- Regular review of likely major commercial risk areas and advising on mitigants.
- Liaising with various internal customers/departments and improving on contractual practices informed by feedback received.
- Assisting in the settlement of commercial claims and disputes.
Collections & Recoveries Management
- Oversee early, mid, and late-stage collections processes to ensure consistency and effectiveness.
- Assisting in restructuring credit and repayment terms, developing strategies and plans to secure collateral better, and collecting and monitoring agreed payments.
- Coordinate with external service providers (auctioneers, debt collectors, valuers, advocates) to support recovery efforts.
- Ensure realization of securities in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements.
- Working with customers and other relevant departments within the Bank to obtain pertinent information and prepare written in-depth analyses and recommendations to protect the Bank and strengthen credit risk assessment.
Qualifications and Experience:
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in law (LLB) from a recognized institution.
- Postgraduate Diploma in Law (KSL).
- Professional qualifications in Credit Management, Risk Management, Banking, or Insolvency will be an added advantage (e.g. ACIB, CPA, ACCA, or Certified Credit Professional).
Experience
- Above 8 years’ experience in banking credit, collections, or recoveries.
- At least 5 years in a supervisory or managerial role within a bank or financial institution.
- Strong understanding of secured and unsecured lending, legal recovery processes, and collateral realization.
