The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a leading Africa-based, African-led, international research institution headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. It conducts policy-relevant research on population, health, education, urbanization, and related development issues across the continent. The Project Coordination Officer will play a vital role in managing complex research consortia, facilitating interdisciplinary efforts, and bridging the gap between technical data and policy translation.
Key Responsibilities
- Consortium Coordination: Collaborate closely with researchers across the consortium to ensure that targeted work is delivered as expected. Serve as the primary contact for consortium partners throughout project implementation.
- Communication & Visibility: Partner with Communications and Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) teams to distill complex research into clear insights for enhancing project visibility and branding. Work with the Policy Engagement and Communications (PEC) team to translate research into policy briefs.
- Data & IT Integration: Coordinate with work package and IT teams to support data-related initiatives, including digital platforms, repositories, dashboards, and knowledge hubs. Facilitate efforts linking data, policy translation, and communication.
- Project Management: Manage work plans, timelines, and deliverables across thematic areas such as Climate Change & Food Security, Human Capital Development, and Economic Transformation & Governance. Monitor program budgets and expenditures.
- Strategic Engagement: Facilitate engagement with AUDA-NEPAD, the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF), national governments, and regional bodies (EAC, ECOWAS, SADC, and IGAD). Support the operationalization of the CACEPS platform.
- Monitoring & Evaluation: Coordinate with the MEL team to track project outcomes and impact, and ensure targets in Partner Performance Agreements (PPAs) are met timely.
- Compliance & Ethics: Ensure all coordination processes adhere to APHRC institutional policies and donor requirements (e.g., World Bank), including standards for ethics, safeguarding, and inclusion.
Required Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- Education: PhD or Master’s degree in Economics (Development, Agricultural, or International Trade), Public Policy, International Development, Data Science and Analytics, Development Studies, Political Science, or a related field.
- Experience: At least 2 years of relevant post-doctoral experience, or a minimum of 10 years of relevant post-Master’s experience.
- Fundraising: Demonstrated success in fundraising and donor engagement.
- Policy Engagement: Proven experience collaborating with African policy institutions (AUC, AUDA-NEPAD), governments, the private sector, and civil society.
- Program Management: Experience coordinating multi-country programs, specifically for World Bank-funded projects.
- Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with African data initiatives, open data, data governance, and digital ecosystems.
- Languages: Fluency in English is required; proficiency in French, Swahili, Arabic, or Portuguese is a plus.
- Soft Skills: Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and negotiation abilities.
