Kenya Commercial Bank Limited is a leading financial institution, and this role is centered within its legal department to oversee commercial legal affairs. The Principal Legal Counsel, Commercial is responsible for the preparation and management of contracts, including leases and general commercial law issues. The role involves driving the contract lifecycle from drafting through negotiation and execution, providing lead support to contract initiatives and projects, and managing the product gate process including tender openings and supplier evaluations. Additionally, the role involves reviewing contract policies and risk management processes in collaboration with the risk and compliance unit to ensure effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities
Contract Management: Preparation and management of contracts including leases and other general commercial law issues. Drive the contract lifecycle from drafting through completion of negotiation process, review, and contract execution.
Project Support: Lead support to the contract initiatives and/or projects.
Process Oversight: Product gate process management including participation in tender opening activities, supplier evaluation, and key business project initiatives.
Risk & Compliance: Review of contract policy, risk management, and processes together with the risk and compliance unit to ensure effectiveness and efficiency of the processes.
Legal Advisory: Provide legal opinions and research/guidance in respect of commercial contracts being negotiated and signed, as well as legal and commercial requirements of all product implementations.
Training: Carry out legal awareness training as appropriate on commercial legal issues.
Probate Administration: Oversee administration of probate accounts.
Reporting: Data management and reporting on statistics.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Law from a recognized university.
Diploma in Law and Advocate of the Court.
A minimum of seven (7) years' relevant post-admission work experience.
Specific experience in legal drafting.
Experience in commercial contracting and contract lifecycle management, preferably in the financial services sector and/or international contracting.
Strong skills in legal communication and advocacy.
Experience in legal risk and compliance management.
Proficiency in stakeholder management of diverse caliber.
