BURN designs, manufactures, and distributes aspirational fuel-efficient cooking products that save lives and forests in the developing world, aiming to revolutionize the global cookstove sector by scaling clean cooking solutions. The company seeks an experienced Legal Counsel – Commercial and Finance Transactions to support its rapidly growing operations across Africa. This role reports directly to the Head of Legal and will focus on managing complex commercial contracts, development and project finance transactions, and critical carbon-related agreements. The successful candidate will work closely with internal teams and external counsel to structure, negotiate, and close complex transactions, while providing practical, business-oriented legal advice that supports BURN’s mission.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Providing legal advice and support relevant to the company’s day-to-day operations, including drafting and negotiating contracts for the sale of carbon credits and for its operational functions.
- Reviewing, negotiating, and closing financing contracts and the related documentation while liaising with external counsel where necessary.
- Review and advise on transaction structure and related documentation, and provide BURN with post-contracting legal support.
- Support in the supervision of external counsel who is retained by BURN on transactions as appropriate.
- Support the Head of Legal in the tracking and maintenance of the transactional documents.
- Perform such other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
Skills and Experience Requirements
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree and qualified practicing advocate/lawyer.
- Minimum 5 years post-qualification experience in commercial and finance transactions, gained in a reputable law firm or in-house legal environment.
- Strong experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial contracts and financing documentation (including international/LMA-style transactions). Project finance experience is an advantage.
