Legal Counsel

The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) is a non-profit organization that seeks to increase access to justice by women through formal and informal justice systems. FIDA-Kenya envisions a society that respects and upholds women’s rights. The mission of FIDA Kenya is to promote women’s individual and collective power to claim their rights in all spheres of life.

This role is integral to providing legal advice, representation, and managing programs aimed at upholding women's rights.

Duties and Responsibilities

Legal Advice and Representation

• Provides FIDA-K clients with legal advice and referral services when required.
• Prepare pleadings and legal briefs.
• Conduct Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), mediation between parties, and referrals to Informal Justice Systems.
• Court attendance.
• Strategic Impact Litigation.

Networking & Building Partnerships

• Assist in coordination of open days, legal aid, and other workshops organized by the Team.
• Represent the Organisation in meetings with stakeholders and strategic partners.
• Coordinate Pro Bono lawyers.
• Establish and maintain linkages with strategic partners.

Programme Management

• Conduct Trainings including clients on self-representation and Informal Justice Systems.
• Implementation of grants (projects) and preparation of donor reports.
• General report writing.

Resource Mobilization

• Identify support in resource mobilization strategies.
• Identify viable projects relevant to the team.
• In collaboration with the grants team, develop proposals.
• Meeting with Donors.

Requirements

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

• Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid practicing certificate.
• Minimum two (2) years post-admission experience as a practicing Advocate.
• Certified Professional Mediator or Qualifications from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
• Excellent writing, editing, research, and oral advocacy skills.
• Very detail-oriented with strong interpersonal, organizational, and coordination skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively, to multi-task, and to work under pressure.
