This role, based in Mombasa, involves providing legal advice and representation to clients of FIDA Kenya (Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya), focusing on improving the legal standing of women. The Legal Counsel is responsible for managing program implementation, fostering strategic partnerships, and assisting in resource mobilization efforts.
Duties and Responsibilities
Legal Advice & Representation
- Provide FIDA-K clients with legal advice and referral services when required.
- Prepare pleadings and legal briefs.
- Conduct Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), mediation between parties, and referrals to Informal Justice Systems.
- Ensure Court attendance.
- Engage in Strategic Impact Litigation.
Networking & Building Partnerships
- Assist in the coordination of open days, legal aid, and other workshops organized by the Team.
- Represent the Organisation in meetings with stakeholders and strategic partners.
- Coordinate Pro Bono lawyers’ activities.
- Maintain linkages with strategic partners.
Programme Management
- Conduct trainings, including training clients on self-representation and Informal Justice Systems.
- Oversee the implementation of grants (projects) and prepare necessary donor reports.
- Ensure timely report writing.
Resource Mobilization
- Identify opportunities to support resource mobilization strategies.
- Identify viable projects relevant to the team.
- Develop proposals in collaboration with the grants team.
- Meet with Donors.
Requirements
To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Be an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid practicing certificate.
- Possess a Minimum of 2 (two) years post admission experience as a practicing Advocate.
- Hold qualifications as a Certified Professional Mediator or from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
- Demonstrate excellent writing, editing, research, and oral advocacy skills.
- Be very detail-oriented with strong interpersonal, organizational, and coordination skills.
- Possess the ability to work collaboratively, to multi-task, and to work under pressure.
