Inkomoko is seeking an Investment Officer to serve as a trusted partner to micro-businesses and SMEs, conducting due diligence, managing investment portfolios, and utilizing investment management systems to drive economic impact and financial inclusion in Kenya.
Role Overview
The Investment Officer will be responsible for evaluating loan applications, conducting thorough due diligence, offering customer support, managing debt repayment, and maintaining accurate records within the Core Banking System.
Key Responsibilities
Due Diligence and Investment Preparation (60%)
Respond to inquiries from prospective borrowers; support them to apply for facility/investment products.
Introduce investment products to entrepreneurs, explaining requirements for repayment and debt financing responsibilities.
Conduct investment appraisals, collect detailed information (personal, business, and guaranties), and arrange new investment accounts.
Prepare and execute investment contracts and arrange for disbursement of investments in kind.
Conduct due diligence on prospective borrowers, including site visits, document preparation, and coordination with Business Development Advisors and Business Associates.
Communicate materials to the Portfolio Manager and assist in preparing credit reports for Investment Committee meetings.
Take photos of entrepreneurs, collect signed photo waivers, and ensure stories are posted accurately on the Kiva platform for fundraising.
Portfolio Management (20%)
Offer excellent customer service through daily conversations, correspondence, and site visits to maintain positive borrower relationships.
Work with the Inkomoko Kenya Business Development Services team to ensure borrower success and conduct monitoring client visits.
Maintain delinquency and default rates below set targets during yearly goal setting.
Track borrower information and communicate client status effectively to key stakeholders.
Participate actively in weekly Portfolio Review Meetings.
Maintain a tracking system of borrower payments and contact details.
Work with the Finance & Admin team to produce payment invoices and complete monthly reconciliations of investment department transactions.
Interact with government leaders, court systems, and others for follow-ups on non-payments.
Ensure compliance with Kiva partnership requirements, including reporting and journaling.
Investment Management System (20%)
Update disbursements and investment repayments in the Investment Management System (CBS-powered by Mifos).
Maintain proficiency with investment software applications and optimize workflows for accuracy and compliance.
Manage user security access and ensure proper segregation of duties.
Advise management on automating key lending processes and ensure proper posting/balancing in the Core Banking System.
Participate in reviewing and recommending operational systems and procedures.
Requirements
University degree in Finance or other related field.
4+ years of work experience in relevant or applicable field.
Must speak fluent English and Swahili. Knowledge of local language is a plus.
Experience in Islamic lending and practice is an added advantage.
Strong financial and accounting skills; familiarity with business financial policies in Kenya.
Experience in investment management, microfinance, capital leases, and access to finance for Micro businesses and SMEs is STRONGLY preferred.
Prior experience dealing with customers/debt and working in a lending environment.
Experience providing business advice to entrepreneurs.
Prior experience in Investment management system software.
Decisive individuals with ability to deliver unpleasant messages to debtors and assertive enough to ensure debt payoff.
Experience managing difficult clients and reaching positive outcomes.
Very strong attention to details and good follow through.
Comfort with the civil court system; previous experience in litigation preferred.
Unrelenting perseverance, personal integrity, and critical thinking skills.
Must be able to legally work in Kenya.
