BANK OF AFRICA - KENYA LIMITED (BOA-KENYA) is a commercial bank providing banking services to corporate, SME and retail clientele. The General Legal Counsel role is a crucial full-time position based in Nairobi, responsible for managing the bank's legal affairs. The Counsel focuses heavily on litigation, overseeing debt recovery processes, managing contract lifecycles, and ensuring comprehensive regulatory compliance within the banking sector.
Responsibility Summary
Issuance of demand letters and statutory notices.
Advising the Bank and liaising with the Bank's external lawyers on actual or threatened litigation matters.
Preparation of comprehensive reports and drafting/reviewing contracts.
Monitoring changes in banking laws and other regulations affecting the bank and ensuring the bank is kept updated on such regulatory changes.
Conducting research on various legal issues and providing timely legal advice on varying internal and external matters.
Academic & Professional Qualifications
The successful candidate must meet the following criteria:
Hold a Bachelor's degree (LLB).
Must be an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
Possess a minimum of 5 years of experience in banking and financial services law, with a strong focus on debt recovery and litigation.
Proven experience in initiating and managing civil litigation matters.
Demonstrated strong knowledge of the local banking industry, banking products, banking services, and banking regulations.
Skills/Experience Required
Thorough understanding of the legal framework governing banking and financial institutions.
Proficiency in litigation procedures.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to build and maintain strong client relationships.
Ability to manage professional relationships effectively both within the internal team and with external stakeholders.
Effective communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written.
Strong critical and analytical thinking abilities required to make informed decisions.
